HELP! Broken Bill!!!!!

I share that concern about the possibility of her swallowing the wound spray, I had a goose with a mouth injury a few years ago and I was really concerned about her swallowing anything I put on the wound.

You could try Apple cider vinegar in her water, it will help reduce bacteria growth in her water and in the wound when she dips her beak in, or you could try adding citric acid to her water for the same reason.

I would say a few days to a week will be enough time for her beak to seal the wound, though I don’t recommend letting her play in mud for two weeks, definitly watch it for signs of infection during that time.
You’re a big Peggy update today.

Sadly this morning she had managed to take off her makeshift brace we made. Whilst we went to get the stuff to re-make it, then managed to pull the cracker area even further off causing it to bleed more.

Luckily I have have BEST in-laws ever and they are born and bred farmers and have owned poultry all their lives. We made the decision between the 4 of us and with a vet over the phone that this part of the beak needed to come off now or it would only cause her more pain and bleeding.

My in laws prepared everything for every possible outcome of a mass bleed including something to cauterize as a just incase.
Luckily it was a was simple and quick with very minimal bleeding, it was immediately washed with salt water and then something to stop infections. Peggy very quickly perked up, and seems a lot happier. I kept water away from her for another hour to help the wound seal a little and now she seems to be eating and drinking well.

Fingers crossed we’re on the right road now…

FYI- this is how we found poor Peggy after her brace came off….. the part of jaw with just handing there. I’ll post a picture later of how she is now.

Peggy update after beak surgery-

It’s early days of course but shes an extremely hungry goose. She may have lost 1/4 of her beak but it’s not stopping her appetite thank god.

She’s getting fresh water every few hours with 2 separate tubs of water for her to drink/stand in. One tub I’ve filled with VIt boost which will hopefully help her heal and it says on there it also helps with stress. And I’ve put some grass in her second tub that’s she enjoying fishing out.

I feel the brace was still the right idea for day one as this allowed her to beak to ‘die off’ so when it was removed today she didn’t lose much blood 🙏🏼

Couldn’t ask for a better goose than Preg & Greg.

Just want to say thanks for being such a good goose parent, she couldn’t have been in better hands <3 all the best for a speedy recovery!
Thank you so much for you kind comment.
I treat my two geese like our family pets, love kindness and the best possible care I can give. My fiancé thinks I’m a little mad but he agrees that he’s never had a nicer pair of geese on the farm.

A little Peggy update- Day 4 of broken beak.

She’s acting like she’s got a full beak. Eating continuously, I can’t pick enough grass at the rate she’s eating it! And she laid a beautiful perfect white egg yesterday which I hope confirms that she is feeling de-stressed.

I went to the farm store this morning to get some special poultry anti-infection spray and checked with the people that a slight ingestion would be ok. Rather than spraying her beak directly, I’m spraying it on gauze first and then simply patting her beak.( not as easy as it sounds 😳)

Yesterday & today shes scoffed half a cucumber proving that losing 1/4 of her beak isn’t going to stop her variety of food. 🥰

Still again early days and I’m keeping an eye on her every few hours and just before I go to bed every night.
Aswell as having Greg for company, she also had 3 donkeys outside of the stable who like to pop their heads over the door to check in.

AND just to make things a little more busy today my Muscovy duck managed to hatch a mix breed duck!!! Very unexpected but extremely cute.
