Hi folks I'm new here. I've been raising a few chickens in my backyard for about to years with little to no issues. Today we opened the coop to find our very vocal and pushy hen with, what looks like, a broken break. There is blood on the outside and the break looks cracked. Not sure what can be done for her as she doesn't like us to touch or hold her even though my daughter hand-raised her as the favorite.

She appears to be very slow and calculating where she would have just thrown herself into whatever was in front of her. Any suggestions would be so appreciated ❤️

Appreciate any direction 🌼

I can tell there is damage, but where is the actual break?
Sometimes they get spooked and things happen.
I had my inlaws dogs come down once (before I had an electric wire) and they chased the chickens from one end of the run to the other. My hen only broke the tip and it grew back. It depends on where the break is as to what to do.
I also can't tell (so forgive me if this is not a concern), but chicken wire is not predator proof and can be easily tore into. But, like I said, I can't see the whole set up.

Last summer my rooster got spooked and I assume ran into the hardware cloth of his coop, breaking his beak in several places. I went out there not long after it happened and there was blood everywhere, still dripping. I thought he might die. I took him in the garage on top of a 55 gal barrel and had someone to help me with supplies (although he was quite still through it all.) I used paper towel and q-tips w/ water to get as much dirt or whatever from the cracks. I then used a q-tip dipped in hydrogen peroxide, let it fizz, and cleaned it back off with water. To finish up I put triple antibiotic ointment on his beak. I also reapplied it a few times, every day or two.

And that was it. It took a while but his beak completely healed. I had to trim a couple places at the tip as it was growing back out b/c it was uneven and cracked a little. No matter what you do, her beak is gonna be sore for a while. I could tell by watching my guy that it hurt for him to pick up pellets and such. Make sure she's eating enough. I wish I had taken pics to show how it healed b/c it was gruesome looking.

Note: Some people say not to use hydrogen peroxide on wounds but I always use it on the initial cleaning and not afterwards. It seems to do a good job of keeping out infection.

Thank you for your reply and concern. Thank you for asking. We have wooden shutters that we close at night.

I'm new to broken beaks, so I'm not sure what I'm looking for at, but it seems like it's broken toward her face and maybe split from where it's attached.

I've separated her for now and given her cooked oatmeal with vitamins in it. She's having trouble eating the dried meal worms and I haven't seen her drink water.

This is such helpful information. Thank you so much! So glad your guy recovered❤️

As long as she's eating, that's a good sign. Maybe try to offer a mash (wetted feed).
If its broke closer to the face in a line across the beak, it might break off and never return. The farther from the face and towards the point, the more likely it will grow back.
Is it just the top that is damaged? She might be in pain. You can offer 5 aspirin (324mg) to 1 gallon of water for pain relief.
