help! broken shell at day 18-20

I had one like that. I kept it in a cup. After a while I gave it some sugar water and electrolites from a dropper (just a drop not a lot you can get fluid into their lungs doing this) and she perked up and lived.

it is indeed. it is in a small pot on damp tissue in the incubator.
the ones that are trying to get out the shells are far more lively.
it has been still in the same position all day. I fear the worst for the baby unfortunately.

Some chick vitamins mixed with boiled yolk may help... So would a little sugar water from a syringe.

hi mrs B,
unfortunately rigor mortis set in by the evening, too late for cpr too.
however we do have 4 fully hatched so far, we also have another 5 that are viable and just waiting to introduce themselves.
I shall bear in mind the advice for future should I face a similar situation.
the 4 we have are real lovely fluffy yellow easter chicks. no idea what they are with regard to breed or sex, but right now I don't really care either. I am just soaking up the cuteness and sharing it round the family!

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

If rigor mortis set in, I doubt CPR would be of much use... I've never heard of anyone doing CPR on a chicken before... Have you?

no, but I did have a chicken many years ago, it was a white curly feathered tiny thing. it looked like a ball of fluff. anyway, I used to let it roam free around the garden where I lived. I came home one day to find it floating in the pond rather lifeless. I pulled it out and it made croaky noises, so I got a hair drier and tried to warm it up with that figuring it had hypothermia. it died, but it had the most beautiful bouffant of feathers I had ever seen before or since. I would totally recommend blow drying those curly things for shows etc, it was amazing!

That is a VERY sad story. Chickens don't swim well at all, so I imagine you caught her on the verge of drowning. I'm happy you were able to pull her out and make her comfortable, at least.

Was it a silkie or a frizzle?

it was a pure white frizzle. curly feathers all over. it was tiny in stature but looked massive because of it's feathers.
I thought it was sad, although I was ridiculed somewhat for trying to warm it up with a hairdryer.
I didn't mind, I know I did all I could it just wasn't enough at the end of the day.
