My Silkie must have sat too hard on the already pipping egg it was all cracked every where and drying out. It looks like the yolk sac isnt completely absorbed. Is there anything I can do? Its still chirping and moving. The bottom half of shell is still atatched. One chick is fully out and dry. Will it peck at it and hurt it?

If you have a bator, wrap it in moist papertowel and put in the bator. If no bator use a light bulb or heating pad and try to keep the eggs temp around 99.5 - 100. Don't let the papertowel dry out but don't get it wet. I'v never had this problem as of yet but I have seen this exact thing posted as advice.

I wouldn't put it back under the hen unless somebody with more experience says to. If the egg yolk was absorbed I would help it out or let it do it on its own. Some say not to help them out but I do anyway. If they are going to die they will die anyway. So far I have only had 1 die that I helped. Those that I didn't all died. And those are ones that attempted to hatch during the night while I was asleep. the one that died ried to hatch during the night and ended up getting dried to the shell and was stuck. It struggled all night and was very weak by the time I got to it. I got it out and it did live for about a week but it was very weak and ate very little.

Good luck and I do hope somebody that has had experience with this situation comes by quickly for the rescue. Have you tried the chat room for help?

ok its out completely! chirping like crazy but the place where the yolk sack meets stomach looks a little open still. It pushed the shell off itself and broke the stringy looking thing like umbelical cord off with its feet. Im keeping most but mom hears it and is all upset Im afraid for other that are pipping! there are five more to go 3 are out now!

My hen was terrible with her eggs and I had to bring an egg inside the house right before it pipped (it was cheeping when I brought it in). Since I don't have an incubator, I put our portable humidifer (the one used for sick kids) inside the bathroom and placed the egg under a light bulb. I used a meat thermometer to make sure the air right above the egg was kept at about 100 degrees and 6 hours later, the chick hatched. It can be done. If you don't have a humidifier, keep the egg warm and spritz the egg with water, so that it doesn't dry out. Good luck.

The chick is back under hen! I hope it works out! I will post some pics when I can!
