OMG i think my roo's by... Daily he hops up in the laying boxes and "lays" his egg... but he mounts the hens... During free range time some of the hens like to ambush my feed area where i also keep the hay for the laying boxes... He climbed in there and made a NEST... And he is about a three year old black and white amaracauna roo. With his spurs so he is most defenly a Roo...I did not raise him he was bought up by a fellow red-neck who said he got roudy with the other roos defending the hens when the other roos tryed to mount...so he was sepeated...and thats his life in a nut-shell and he has 7 girls to take care of right now my baby becky-boo (yes i call him Becky-boo His real name is Beck)is the laughing stock of the county right know and i just wan't to blame this on some kind of defecy because people are cutting the accusing eye at me now PLEASE HELP MY BECKY-BOO

Well i don't know about your roo but BISEXUAL is how you spell it. Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine.

Some roos will go in the nesting boxes to lure the hens in to encourage them to lay (as if they need encouragement). Sounds like a typical roo with a soft side for caring for the hens. I wouldn't worry about it.

edited to add: There have been people on here that have showed pictures of their roos that will sit on the eggs in the nests when the hens get up to stretch, eat, dirt bathe, potty, etc. You're roo is all male with a good heart.

You might also see him 'mount' or try to mount a younger roo.. This is for dominance... making sure the young fellow KNOWS he is the BOSS!

i wouldn't worry about unless he starts preening for hours at a time and talking about his *fabulous* nest making abilities.

Preping the nest boxes is one of the roosters job. He show his girls where to lay the eggs. Sounds like he is doing what good roosters should be doing. When I had mine he would prep the nests, then cluck and coo to get the girls attention. They would all watch him.

I agree he is prepping the nests.... what a good boy! I love watching this they purr & make their noises...
No need to worry

That's normal. Some roos are just more into the egg laying process than others. He gets in the nest box to lure hens to lay eggs there and carry on the next generation. It's like he's saying,"Hey baby, this sure is a nice place to lay an egg. How 'bout you come on over here and lay an egg."
