I havn't been canning for very long; cheese, fruits and meat mostly. My MIL showed me how to do kidney and pinto beans about eight or nine months ago. I was wondering if you could can a mix of both beans together, as long as the measurements stay accordingly. I make Taco soup and I use a little of each kind of bean, I though if I could can a mix that would make it easier to throw the soup together, and not waste the rest of the kidney, with the rest of the pinto I make refried beans. Any way If I could get some help I would be grateful!! Thanks!

Of course you can mix them. Kidney beans are pressure cooked for 90 minutes (I think). When you mix your beans, just make sure that you pressure cook for whatever bean takes the longest.

Sure, mixing in the jars is no problem. All dry beans or dry peas are canned 90 min for quarts, 75 min for pints. Here's a link to the NCHFP site with details:

I love doing my own beans in pints jars. Our favorites are kidney, pinto, black beans, baked beans (pork n' beans), split pea soup. They're so handy in the cupboard - and much better than commercially canned.

Kim~ how do you do your baked beans?? I had no idea you could can baked beans, but I would love to learn! Thanks again!

I use this recipe from an older Kerr canning guide.

Canned Baked Beans
Yield: 8 pints

4 cups dry navy beans
1/2 lb salt pork, ham or bacon cut in small pieces
4 teaspoons salt
4 tbsp molasses
6 teaspoons prepared mustard
1 1/2 cups catsup
8 tbsp brown sugar
2 cups onions- chopped

Wash beans thoroughly. Cover with cold water and soak overnight. Boil in same water 45 minutes. Drain beans, SAVING THE WATER. Add all ingredients to beans and 2 cups bean liquid. Mix well. Pack into jars to within one inch of top. Put on cap, screw band firmly tight.

Process in pressure canner. Pints for 75 minutes and quarts for 90 minutes at 10 pounds pressure

Over in the 'what are you canning' thread I posted this one:
Seasoned Pinto Beans w/Bacon & Onion - these work great as a side dish. Or open a jar, pour into skillet, smash beans, add 1/2 tsp each cumin and chili powder, cook until thickened....WaaLaa! Refried Beans! LOL...caution though, you'll never want store bought refried beans again.
