Hi! So my second batch of chicks were naughty, and kept pecking the weak chicks, and long story short we seperated the naughty ones and the nice ones. Now, one of the nice ones, a Polish, was pecked really badly by the naughty ones, and she is bloody everywhere, poor thing. Her neck is now almost completely bare, and bloody, and slo around her wings and vent. The new, nice chickss we put her with aren't pecking her, but I am still really worried, considering how fragile she looks now, and how much blood there is. We applied Blu-Kote, but her neck is basically bare, so it didn;t really cover anything. And it looks like she may occassionally be pecking herself - or maybe preening? and so her beak gets all bloody.

PS. She is about 4-5 days old - she was shipped, and we got her on Wednesday. She also had some pasty butt, but I think that is cleared up now. And she looked bigger when she was first came - now she looks weaker and smaller :(

Sorry for the bad pictures - I just didn't wan to pick her up cause she is probably wuite stressed right now, after getting picked up, sprayed, moved to different boxes, etc. But even though it isn;t too clear, her neck is just completely raw and bloody.

I had this problem but just not as bad. As long as you make sure that they aren’t pecking her, and you are applying something to help her heal, (like the Blue Kote or Vetericyn) she should probably be fine. I would also give her electrolytes in her water. That’s what I did, but mine wasn’t as bad so i’m not quite sure. Just keep an eye on her and make sure she’s acting normal. I’m really sorry you had to deal with this.😕
Anybody else have advice?

I would think you would want to clean her off from the blood as best you can so the others don’t see it and peck at her. For what it’s worth, I have always used neosporin or any type of antibacterial ointment when my birds have open wounds that they can’t reach. It has helped heal many of my birds.

Good to know. Its just that she seems so fragile now, compared to when she came :(

And that won't hurt her? I know for humans, the best way to clean wounds is water, not paper towels, but I don;t wanna get her soggy... I did apple Neosporin though,

I’m sure that was fine. Yeah, I wouldn’t suggest getting her wet. I was just suggesting to clean off the blood as I just know chickens will peck at blood on another bird. Sounds like you are doing the best you can for the chick.

I’ve had this happen two of my hens they were only a few weeks older than yours, and it was the top of their heads. One was so bad that you could see the top of her jaw bone any time that she moved her beak, and you could see her skull, she lived to be 5 years old, and the other is raising 2 babies of her own now.

What I did was separate them completely from the other chickens so they wouldn’t be bothered or stressed. I cleaned them up so there was no blood left on them, trimmed the feathers around the wounds so they wouldn’t stick to the chickens. Also I trimmed off any skin that was hanging on by a thread or to damaged to save. If there was any good chunks of skin still decently attached but hanging off the wound I put it back where it belonged and I put some neosporn on it and watched to make sure it didn’t get infected. Both hens healed up nicely but they did scar and the feathers never grew back in that area but they didn’t seem to mind it.

when I let my chickens out to free range I will get a picture of my hen and post it here to show what it could look like for you.

Long story short the chick has a high chance of a great life ahead. Just keep doing what you are doing and I wish you the best of luck. Both of their accidents are on my profile here if you want to take a look at them and see their stories.

The post of the one that was really bad was from 2015 and the name of the thread was rooster got little chick help?

Thanks! Yes, I was worried, cause this new batch of chicks I put her with are very nice, but I am just worried that if i leave the blood on, and they accidently taste it, they might start pecking her and getting nasty.

Here’s what one of my hens looks like now

she is the one that had a piece of her skull bone exposed. The one that had the jaw bone exposed sadly was taken in a massacre back in November so I don’t have her any more but she had just turned 5 years old.
