I have a Jersey Giant chick and she hasn't eaten any food in two days. She's only about 3 days old now. She's tiny and frail. She looks completely healthy with the right color, all her down feathers, both eyes nice and bright. However, she won't sit down. She stands all the time. She just balances on her little legs non stop. I have been giving her a dropper with electrolytes and water. She will drink it. She chirps a little bit. I've watched her try to peck at the chick starter and she doesn't seem to open her mouth and come away with any food. I tried to wet it and put the mash on her beak and nothing! So, I mixed a little yolk, sugar, water, electrolytes, and a bit of iron free poly-vi-sol and she seems to have the tiniest bit of energy. I've had to separate her because the other chicks plow past her and knock her down and she can't complete with their energy. I can tell she's trying to survive but I don't know what else to do. Please, if you have any thoughts, let me know. I want to help her if possible. By the way, she has pooped the the tiniest bit.

Sounds like your doing everything right. Keep dipping her beak in water and mash. Sometimes there is nothing we can do. Good luck

Chicks can get dehydrated so easily. Is she able to poop just fine? Separating her from the others, dropper-feeding, and making sure she has plenty of water are all the right moves. Iron can stop up the intestines, so don't add iron drops if you can avoid them. Keep doing what you're doing and make sure she's warm. Perhaps stroking her little belly will help her digestive system kick in. Good luck!

She just died. Thanks for the suggestions.

I know some folks say that it's just the way it goes or that it's just a chick, but it breaks my heart.

My boys asked me why I was only paying attention to that one chick when we had all those other new babies.... sigh.

Sorry for the loss of your chick:( It's so hard for children to understand what we're doing. I do the same and continue to try even when there's no hope left. I just lost a five month old that somehow got inured in the coop. I had her in the house for a week and she kept fading until she started having seizures:( It was my first cull.I will never forget her and will never be able to cull again. I just don't have it in me.
