A lot will disagree with this....
What I have done when I had this happen, is I did the same as you to begin with.
The rule is if you see blood STOP, ok?
Make sure it has a little hole to breathe with, is its beak actually sticking out?
Wait about two to three more hours, then slowly peel just a wee bit of shell back some more.
If u see more blood, then stop right away.
Over the course of 10 to 12 hours I have been able to get stuck chicks out of their shell this way and most of them have lived.
If the membrane gets stuck to their bodies, undo it with just a drop of warm water at a time and be VERY careful it doesnt get near the beak so he breathes it in and drowns.
I did accidentally drown one of mine that way, but I have also rescued about 12 that did make it and grew up strong and healthy. I have also done turkey babies this way, my humidity just must not have been enuff, as their membranes were so tuff they couldnt break thru. The majority of mine have made it fine.
Just be oh so careful and gentle and PATIENT when peeling the shell back.
