Hi, I have a garden fenced off and my barred rock got in there and must have eaten some tomatoes I had just sprayed.
I found her today in the back of yard, no moving much and breathing fast with white liquify stuff coming from vent.
I have given her first dose of the epsom salts flush and have her separated from other chicken inside for the night. Is there anything else I can do or just wait?? How fatal is eating lots of tomatoes with insecticide on them?? I love this chicken, my poor poor Amelia.

What chemical did you use for spraying? I would read the label, and call the number on the label if no poisoning info is given. Many poisons affect the nervous system, but I would keep her penned and watch her. Hopefully she won't have any serious problem.

the insect spray has pyrethrins and piperonyl Butoxide.

She is still awake and alert, but just wants to lay down. Have kept her inside in protected large box with water and mush. She isn't eating, but is drinking a lot of water. I used the flush once more last pm. She had one regular poo and now it's just diarrhea that is sticking all over her tail feathers.

I tried putting her outside this am for about 2 hours and she just sat in one area and then make it back to coop, but had to stop and rest a while before getting all the way. It's about 95 degrees the high today in LA, so brought her back in a/c and have water close at her side.

She seemed better yesterday than today.

Anything else I could be doing??

THanks for all help.

Hello all!

Just wanted to give update that chicken is healthy and happy. My advice to anyone whose chicken is sprayed by or eaten recently sprayed plants:

Symptoms of chicken:
Breathing fast with elevated HR (notice vent will be opening/closing to respiration rate)
Lethargic and just laying in cool area
watery poo dripping from vent and all over bottom tail feathers

What I did to help the chicken:

It was 92 degrees outside in LA with 88% humidity, so brought inside in cool, dry area with low lighting in a contained box with shavings and fresh water. Once inside, used the epsom salt flush method: 1tsp epsom salts to 1/2cup water and used syringe gently down gullet to flush toxins. Changed the water inside every other hour and added electrolytes to water.

Continued this cycle only 2 more times (every 12 hours).

Watch hen and after 2 full days indoors attempted to put out, but still lethargic. Brought back in for 2 more full days (total 4 days). No more flushes just fresh water, added a small ¼ cup of yogurt for her to eat twice a day. THen on last day introduced regular food.

Watch for full stools to be produced, increased activity and irritation being in box.. This was time for her to return to the others.

So happy for this website and all the help it gave me by searching and reading. My barred rock, Amelia is alive thanks to you all!!
