please help, our 2 year old leghorn hen started standing very erect and waddles when she walks. we picked her and looked her over adn saw that her abdomen was swollen and felt like it was filled with fluid. that was a few days ago and when my sister felt the hen's stomach yesterday she said it had hard lumps in it, like gravel (or small eggs) in her abdomen.

i don't know what's going on with her, perhaps egg bound, or read somewhere about cancer and that seems to fit the description, however i would appreciate any opinions and recommended treatments.

thank you for responding Britney, i'll see what i can find, but i'm afraid it may be too late. she's doing very poorly today and won't move at all.

I had a hen that did the same thing. it is NOT eggbound. in order to save her you must drain off the fluid. Here is what I did. wash the lower abdomen with alcohol. Get a syringe with a big needle and insert and draw off the fluid. Big around but not long. Insert the needle just enough to get into the fluid and draw it out. II used the kind of syringe that could "unplug" from the needle. I would leave the needle in her and just keep inserting the syringe into the bottom of the needle. This way I would not be poking her hundres of times. I took off about 3 cups of clear yellow tinged fluid. Takes 10-15 minutes.

Try to get two people. and make sure to keep her as up right as possible. I had to do this two times with her and it worked perfectly and she rebounded within a day and was back to mormal. The last time, I was by my self and roller her over on her side and I think the fluid got in her lungs. She sharted choking and fluid came out her mouth and she died within a minute.

So I would suggest, putting her on the edge of the washer on a towel, insert the needle between her legs on the lower part of her abdomen. This way, after you've drawn off the majority of fluid, it can still continue to drain. We kept her in t he house that night. She slept quite nicely in the laundry room laundry tub/sink.

She rebounded quite nicely. I hope this helps.
