1 out of 7 has been hatched! they were due tomorrow. this is my first time with hatching and I don't know what to do - should I take the chick if the others don't hatch today or should I leave it? I have been told that the broody might get out of the nest to feed this one so that the other eggs might cool down and don't hatch.

is is true that males hatch 1 day before the others?

Congrats on your hatched chick :celebrate As the chick has hatched under your broody I would just leave her to do her job. She should stay on the nest untill she feels hatch is complete this could be another 24 plus as the chick that has hatched does not need food and water yet as it lives off the yolk sac it absorbed prior to hatch, mother hen will know this and should continue to sit.

21 days is just a guide and nothing is set in stone when it comes to chicks hatching. I have to say I have never heard of males hatching a day early. I incubate using an incubator and mainly polish and I generally get my first hatcher on day 20.

Congrats on your hatched chick

I didn't count well, it is 21 days. I still don't see other chicks, it seems this is the only one so far. it is a little brahma. there is another brahma egg and 5 polish. can't wait to see if they will hatch.

There you are! When you get a minute, stop by the other thread. I have something for you

As far as the 1 chick under the broody, has this broody hatched before? For the most part I agree with Yorkshire that a broody will stay until she feels it is complete, but I have had 2 instances where first time mommies jumped off the nest with the first chick to hatch. I still wouldn't take the chick away from her. Chances are she will stick it out, and I wouldn't want to risk upsetting her so that she leaves the nest anyway. My silkies have stayed on the first chick for up to 3 days waiting on the rest. I say let nature take its course

this is first time mommie but she is doing well. I have been told to remove the shell so that another egg does not get inside it and that chick will not suffocate. but there was no shell, mommie ate it! the chick mostly stays under the broody so she is not trying to leave the nest so far. I keep checking on them. still no other chicks.

Everything sounds perfect to me

There is a very, very minor chance that a chick could get stuck. I've had it happen in an incubator, but never under a broody. It sounds like you are right on schedule, and mommy is sticking to it, so hopefully you will have a nest of babies by tomorrow

thank you. still no other chicks. do they hatch at night? there is no light in the coop.
They just hatch whenever they hatch. As long as the hen is on the nest, I wouldn't worry. Unless it's very cold, I never add light to the coop. The mama knows what she is doing. My last silkie stayed on the nest until day 23, then walked out with these
