help - chicks hatching

no other chicks. it is day 21. broody is still sitting. I put water and food next to her and she ate some without getting up. she was calling the little one but I didn't see it come out. it is raining so I guess the chick is better under the broody. I think she should be fine as she ate and drank well just a few ours before the chick hatched.

That's a good sign that she is staying with the nest. If it is raining, the chick staying under mama is a good thing. Broodies make good mamas, but chickens aren't very smart in general, so if she led it outside in the rain, it could find it's way into a puddle and she couldn't do anything about it. I lost 5 silkie chicks at one time that way one day while I was at work. If you are free ranging, they probably have room to avoid ppuddles, but if they are in a pen, take the opportunity during the rain to look for any low spots that hold water and fill them in

they are in a kind of maternity ward, closed and away from the other chickens. It does not rain to much, there will be no puddles at this time of the year but it gets too windy when raining.

I don't know if she will give up sitting if they don't hatch or I should intervene. till when should I let her sit?

Personally, as long as she is sitting I would let her be. There's nothing that you could do better than her, so give her every chance you can. If she is still sitting on day 23, then you may want to check the eggs to see if they are still alive. That's a personal choice, and I wouldn't do it, I would just chalk them up as no hatches. Aren't you on day 21? You still have a very good shot. Trust the mama for a few more days. If she does happen to leave the nest with the chick early, then you could check the other eggs for viability

thank you. I have just checked on her. she is sitting and eating. the little one is around her, not interesting in eating. no other chicks. keep waiting. I hope the little one - very light yellow brahma chick, will have company.

The little one may not eat for a day or two, it's full on the yolk sac it just absorbed. Mommy will teach it how to eat and drink. My fingers are crossed for more!

definitely 1 chick only - broody gave it up and I picked up 6 rotten eggs! the little one is fine, eating, drinking even went for a walk! my muscovie tried to eat it while the broody was having dust bath! I don't leave them free with the other chickens, they will stay in the closed place till the chick grows up. I will accompany them a few times per day when the broody will want to feel some freedom.

I will take a photo of them and post it tomorrow. tried today but the little one went under the broody.
