Returned from vacation on Sunday evening. Had our neighbor watching coop as she has done before. She called Sunday morning letting me know that she had found one of the chickens dead and another hiding under coop and wouldn't come out. No other concerns. Got home, found chicken still under coop and a completely different chicken dead in nesting box. No evidence of predators. However, the one under the coop would not move and seemed to occasionally pant with dripping beak. Some very reddish droppings all over coop and run. Went back out and gently forced her out from under coop. She almost immediately passed away, head hung and cloudy, stinky fluid just drained from her beak for several seconds. Next day another chicken started not wanting to come out of coop and diarrhea below her overnight roost. I immediately isolated her and cleaned out entire coop. Replaced fresh water for the coop and all bedding.

In my concern and search for what was going on, I'm afraid I've become so confused with all I've read. I'm not sure if there is one thing or more than one thing going on. I initially thought it was a respiratory illness. Then the reddish poop continued and thought it was cocci. I could not get to Corid until today, but placed probiotics in all water sources yesterday. I'm debating whether to start Corid. The isolated chick still has very watery diarrhea but no signs of dripping beak. She prefers to lay around but eating/drinking less and her comb goes back and forth between more pale to bright red. Egg production in flock went from 12 daily to 2 daily in a flock of 11 that is now down to only 8 chicks. I have not changed anything in their habitat or food since I have had them. The only thing they have had extra would be scraps or meal worms but I am careful with what I give them. Over the summer we have started letting them free range and forage during the day. But again that has been going on several months long before this illness. My older 4 are 1.5 years old and my newer 4 are 7 months old. I have a mixed flock of my older group which are Maran, Silver Wyandotte, Dominique, and Buff Orpington (my fav). My younger group are 2 Brahmas and 2 Speckled Sussex.

Is a vet or necrospy at state lab an option?

What all and how exactly are you feeding?
Are crops emptying overnight?

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!

You say your newer 4 are 7 months old. How long have you had them? If they are recent additions, did you quarantine them before adding them to your flock? If so, for how long? I'm so terribly sorry for your sudden losses, I know this can be devastating. I hope the experts here can help you solve this mystery and save your flock.

We are in in NE Missouri, west of St Louis. I'll update my profile.

Feed layer pellets in automatic feeder that is protected from weather. I will feed cracked corn once daily in winter and scratch once daily in the summer. They started free ranging my yard and wooded area behind yard during day in early summer and they started eating less pellets but still eat them daily. Worms for treats. They will always finish the scratch and worms.

Vet could be option but I'm trying to keep this less expensive as possible, our vets around here are VERY EXPENSIVE and will charge for every little thing!! I grew up in rural Kansas ans used to the "good 'ol vet" and they do not exist here.

Yes they were started as chicks and quarantined in my old coop until they were roughly 12 weeks old.

I understand about the vet, finding one worth the money is difficult, then paying for it another.

If another birds dies(double bag it and put it in the fridge-not freezer) a necropsy might be your best bet to find out what is ailing these birds.

@ChickenCanoe probably knows of a lab to send it for testing.

There are 3 labs in MO but the best one IMHO is the vet school at Mizzou (Columbia). The avian pathologist is very helpful. The others are in Springfield and Jefferson City.
If you call Mizzou they will send you a FedEx label for shipping or you may be close enough to drop off a carcass. They have someone on call 24/7 year round. I've dropped off a bird after midnight on a Saturday night on a holiday weekend.

Depending on where you live, I know of at least 3 good avian vets that may be within driving distance for you.
Dr. Donald Van Walleghen at Jersey Calhoun Veterinary Hospital on the Jersey/Calhoun county line in western IL.
Dr Haley Fagan, I'll try to find her contact info. If I do so today
Dr. Van Horn at Tri-City animal and bird clinic in Ellisville.

At 7 months, I doubt the problem is coccidiosis.
What you are suspecting is coccidia, not cocci.
Cocci is a misnomer many on this forum use.
Cocci refers to any microorganism that is spherical in shape.
Coccidia is a specific type of protozoa that can afflict the intestines of chickens and basically any other animal with soil contact, even humans. Coccidia is the one treated with amprolium (Corid).
