I had a hen sitting on 2 Pekin duck eggs. I was pretty sure one wasn’t viable when I candled on day 12. This morning, day 16,

that egg was out of the box and crushed. The other egg was still in the box but one of the hens had pecked it. Membrane is broken in one place and dime sized area has no shell but membrane is intact. Duckling is still moving. Can I seal it with bees wax?

If it was out of the box maybe she rejected it. Next time may be worse. Do you have an incubator you can put it in? Don't use bees wax. Do you have any nail polish? Natural polish is better, but any will do.

Yes, it’s in an incubator now. The nail polish won’t be absorbed into the exposed membrane?

That's good. Maybe you should use tape instead. I didn't realize the membrane was broken. Don't get your hopes up too high. Cut a small length of clear tape and put it over the crack. Then leave it in and hope for the best. Don't turn it any more.

Made it until 4th days before hatch and then it died. Suspect infection since the egg turned dark around the crack and then spread. Thank you for asking! Next time I’ll isolate the broody hen from the other chickens.
