My barred rock pullet seemed normal.....but over the last couple of weeks her comb stayed re correct colour but it started drooping!!! Iy was to the point it was over her eye on one side. Then she started getting a bad odor ..her feathers and everything smelled like a dead animal!!!! But they are in a coop and had no dead animal contact. She was the only one that smelled like that....this morning I found her dead......should I be concerned that. This mysterious disease will kill my other chickens!!???????!!??!?!?!?!?!??! I need help please

Please look up Coryza and see if this is what your chicken had. I can't think of anything else unless she had a widespread infection that you didn't catch.

I would clean out and disinfect the coop, waterers and feeders. Using a spray bottle, I would spray down everything with a bleach water solution. Allow to dry. Put all fresh bedding, feed, water, etc back in. I hope it is nothing contagious. If it is, the disinfecting will help.

If anyone else starts with symptoms, remove and quarantine them immediately.

Was it a sour, rotty smell like bad milk and yuck or more of a rottng meat smell? Did her chest look bloated at all? Was she losing weight?

If something gets stuck in her crop, then food collects in there and can start to rot. This does result in a bad very sour smell. This is known as impacted or sour crop and is not contagious. Her chest would have been very swollen though.

I would also check all of your birds for mites and lice and consider worms if you have not dewormed them yet. Although I don't know that would cause a smell.

Thank you, I think it was a sour crop. I did not think to check her crop. It was kind of a rotten meat smell. I really appriceate all of your help.
