Hi all i have another thread on donald and daffy. donald is the one on my head but this morning i opened his cage and as usual he jumped to the top but when he jumped down his foot got stuck and i think he broke his toe. well i know he did because its clearly broken. the vets around me who deals with them has closed down and i was wondering what i should do. any help would be greatful

he is not limping too much and still running around although i have sepereated him. into a box. hes his normal self but what should i do to treat is. he lets me fiddle with it and dosent seem to hurt him so im confused. here a re some pictures :S

I remembered i have some plaster strips which i could use to make a cast on his toe. i wanted to give it a few hours to see if theres colour change to make sure theres no damaged blood vessels. then i could make the cast and quick dry it with a blow drier. what do you all think?

I'd just leave it alone for now, ducks heal super fast and most likely he'll be fine in a couple days. just keep him off your head and other high places where he might try to jump down and possibly make it worse if he landed on it wrong.

You could do the cast thing but he should heal up just fine without it. Any breaks should mend and heal themselves.

Really? should i just isolate him and let him rest. it kind of seems to be a bad break :S but the fact it dosent seem to hurt him too much is comforting. should i just let him rest and how long do you suppose it will take to heal to the point where he can be allowed to walk about again??

Poor baby! Always so difficult when our little buddies are hurting and we feel so helpless. Would think it will heal itself. Personally I have broken two toes myself over the past month, and though painful, they healed themselves. Would just leave it be and keep him quiet if you can, he'll let you know when he feels better, should only be a matter of days. You could maybe try to tape it to immobilize, instead of cast, but don't even think that is necessary. Just keep an eye on it and pamper him. Maybe some nice cold water to sit in by himself? Good luck!

Thanks guys. ive put him in some cold water but because he refuses to sit still and is jumping everywhere for no reason im scared hell hurt it more. i made a cast of his toe, dried it the placed it on the top and held it with tape so hes not soo tempted to use it. so far im trying to keep him chilled although all he wants to do is play. hes watching tv with me now so ill just keep him nice and calm for the next few days. heres some updated photos

Poor Donald.

It's worth trying the cast, but as others have said it will heal up on its own. Should be fully healed in a few weeks (as long as he doesn't break it again). He may just have temporarily dislocated it at the joint though, or just given it a wrench, so it may not be broken... Does it seem broken in between joints or at the joint?

If you do find a vet then ask about some Metacam which is an anti-inflammatory which will help with any swelling and pain. The dose for birds is twice the dose for dogs (in case the vet doesn't know).

I'm sure that Donald will be fine :)

Well when i play with it it dosent seem to hurt him at all but i can bend it quite a bit. to me it might seem dislocksted because you can feel like its sorta shifter like you can feel a bum on one side. he dont seem to me in too much pain but also hes being a little less active this afternoon. i was worried hed damage it more if he kept jumping around. how can i tell if its dislocated and i was scared to sort of pull it towards me to see if it goes back into place. would you advise this or leave it?

I'd leave it alone unless your a vet and know what to do.
