Help! Don't know is she is or isnt!

My chicken is 26 weeks old and We don't think she's laying but every day she gets out of her pen in into the yard so we don't know if she's laying out in the yard...

The only way to know if she's laying is to pen her where she can't get out. The other signs are a bright red comb, a moist red vent area, a handsbreadth of space between her pin bones, and she squats when you run your hand down her back.

How can I do that so that I can take it down easy?

Do you have a picture of the pen? Also, how is she getting out? Is she squeezing through some hole? Flying over? If so you could just clip her wings.

There's no way we can answer how to keep your bird in unless we know what the pen looks like. You'll need to post some pics for us to give ideas.

We think she's flying over cuz we sealed all the holes. And her wings are clipped. I'll have to post pictures tomorrow but I ended up making a mini pen inside the big one with a tarp over it and a little bucket nesting box. Hope shell lay! Thanks everyone. I'll give updates soon.

You're going to be doing yard work or something one day and come across an old nest! LOL, YUCK!

You might need to show her the right place for eggs. Put wooden eggs in the boxes so she knows...

my birds kept getting out of their pen also as we only have a 3 foot fence around them so they flew over. I was worried about the same thing happening to us also because they started to take "walks" around the neighbors driveway

It really was funny seeing my big BR, RIR AND Speckled hamburg walking single file, scoping out things, lol. Anyway, I got some bird netting from Lowe's and some bungee cords and put it over the pen and it works perfect! I don't know if your pen is small enough though, but maybe it's worth trying?

If she's getting out daily, I'll bet she's got a nest somewhere. Find some little kids and offer them a dollar to search your yard, like an Easter egg hunt.
