Help! Droopy wing in pullet? Injury palsey?

Awww, Leadwolf, that's really nice about your CHicu. And all the yummy things they can eat.

Rhoise, a few of us that do have Marek's keep a bachelor pad for the roos. I can't rehome mine, and they are all sweet and will stay here.

"If" a flock has Marek's, you will just be adding vaccinated chicks either from a hatchery or incubated yourself. And if you hatch your own eggs, the offspring will most likely be resistant.

Like Blondie said, take a deep breath, and don't stress over what you can't control.

When I got my first horse, I subscribed to Equus magazine. All about horses, muscles, cells, hooves, illnesses, etc. But I had to cancel my subscription after a year because of all the informational articles that drove me to panic!

Got another egg today from my pullet in isolation, I didn't think she would lay cause she was a bit stressed being by herself. When I got home from work she was in the nest box and i didn't want to bug her in case she was laying, and sure enough another big beautiful egg! Still not doing well with her wing! but eating drinking and moving around quite a bit. I'm going to look into a wrap or possibly has anyone ever trimmed the wing to make it lighter, and easier to support?? just a thought, if it is injury? The tip is dragging occasionally, or she is stepping on it?

Why don't you just get her blood tested. I live in southern NM, very remote, nobody treats chickens. One vet was kind enough to take my chicken's blood and send it to a lab to test for Marek's. She did NOT have Marek's. She had a droopy wing, slightly curled toes, splayed legs. I believe she did have a vitamin deficiency because another hen came down with the same symptoms and right away I put poly-vi-sol in water (plus fed some hamburger, parsley) and that one got better! Think it was curly-toe paralysis. Given vitamins to young chickens ever since and no more paralysis.

Get a blood test if you can, though.

Good luck!

Could you post more information about your vet and that blood test? According to all information from many poultry specialists, the only way to diagnose Marek's is through Necropsy. I know that many would be interested in knowing more about this blood test. Where it is done, how much it costs, how often it is right vs wrong?

This could be invaluable for those of us who are battling Marek's or, those of us who suspect Marek's.

Update on my pullet, she is doing better with the paralysis and droopy wing but still not roosting, sleeping on the coop floor in grass nest. She has been acting a little off( in a different way) since Friday. I noticed her crop is huge( distorted huge breast, no neck look about her, thought it was from injury)and very firm, started massaging it and gave her some oil and warm water mixed this afternoon.

It seems a bit smaller and less firm tonight, I am withholding food till morning, and gave her ACV in a small waterer in the iso pen to see if she is able to empty her crop. The other girls are starting to notice she's off and are picking on her a bit, so hence back to the ISO pen.

She has been laying an egg daily now for a week,(poor thing I wish she wouldn't but glad she has, so I know that she must have some fight left in her!), and Saturday evening I clipped her bad wing to take some weight off of it because it was interfering with her mobility. Today her wing looks great, no more drooping but she was moving around really slow. She is eating(until I took food away today) and her poo looks normal?? Poor girl just a mess....she seems a bit lethargic bit it was cold and rainy here today, and her crop was all destended....Pretty sure it's not Marek's because of the laying daily and the wing improvement, but wondering why she is still acting sick.

Hey Julie, sounds like impacted crop...she may just be stopped up in there...lots of water with vitamins and the oil is a good idea. Keeping her isolated until her crop empties is a good idea. Glad to hear her wing is better.

In other news, I got home from Tour on Saturday and had a sick duck! LOL, Ivy threw up 3 times in the yard! So much for my perfectly healthy birds I was bragging about

So it was off to Walgreens for a spendy bottle of activated charcoal capsules to detox her. Consequently, she is much better but sheesh!! Keep us updated on little Snow, I hope she feels better soon...I need to post that pic I took of her!

Another update....the pullet's crop finally emptied a few stones and some air soft bbs, possibly gut lineing and a bunch of grass came out in the poo....

I've been mixing yogurt layer pellets and a bit of canned pumpkin to feed her.

Some thing else, two days ago she seemed worse with the balance again spreading her wings to balance and does this weird thing where she pulls her foot way up to her chest and deliberatley places it like she can't feel it hit the ground thing???

She appears to have no neck, pulling her head way back so her neck bulges out underneath her chin, looks like a swoolen crop almost but on the right.

She didn't lay an egg for the last two days and I was considering culling her because she just sits around and hardly moves much, but, she is eating well and seems not to be in pain other than stumbling.

The darndest thing she layed a nice big brown egg today??? up in the coop in the nest box, so somehow she stumbled up there(I took her out before work and have her in the run on a towel for traction and warmth) and she got back down and was laying on the towel when I came home?.

She doesn't seem to mess herself, gets up and poos(several in the pen when i get home) So.......does anyone think this could be wryneck? or the begginings of it? I went and got her polvsoy two days ago after her crop emptied and her neck seemed twisted back, I also got her some raw sunflower seed meats cause i heard it was high in vit e and selinium?? her poo looks totally normal nice firm white caps, her only issue now is balance and she is not very active(sits around and walks around slowly).

I'm so sorry that she isn't getting better

Please, if you cull, do yourself and your flock a favor and have her necropsied. You really need to find out what you are dealing with.
