Help, duck hatched early

Give it some more time, just don't rush it... when it's ready it will start moving on it's own... might give it a drop of poly visol w/out iron to help give it a boost... just make sure it doesn't breath it in, and give a couple drops of water after to get the taste out...

You've done well, btw... biggest thing is to be patient... I had a little grey call that took 3 days to absorb it's yolk after pipping... it's now a happy, healthy little troublemaker, lol...
Good luck and hope all comes out well!

Ok, I don't have poly visol, but I do have ducky/chick electrolyte powder. I mixed it with some water in a dropper and gave her some. Then one more time about 30 minutes later and POOF, she no longer wanted to be in the cup! I put her on a warm cloth on flat in the brooder and she got rid of the rest of the egg shell on her own (no blood, just the umbilical cord thingie). I put the antibiotic ointment on her cord and she is now peeping away trying to walk! Woohoo!

AWESOME!!! Great job!! That is how a successful assist should always end!! So very happy for you and both your baby duckies!! Glad they have such a wonderful mommy!!
Please post a pic of her after she's all fluffed up?? I'd love to see her and am glad to have helped, even if it was mostly moral support. :D

Good job!! Just to let you kbow ducklings r very weak for 1-2 days after hatch.

Ok, I have a question and I feel silly asking, but how close is the umbilical cord to the sex organ? When I put the antibiotic ointment on, I saw a little white thingie dancing around....do I have a boy? lol

There are no stupid questions! :)

The umbilical cord is at their belly button, their cloaca (where sexual organs are and also where they poo and lay eggs from) is farther down close to the tail. It's not easy to see their penises, you have to invert (flip out) their vent in order to see them (which should only be done by someone who knows how to avoid injury), so I doubt that is what you are seeing. Can you post a pic at all?

Also, congrats on your new little ones! Sounds like your preemie is doing well. ^-^

Their vent is directly above from where the cord is attached, just under their tail... if it came from there, you may have a boy, lol... ducks do have male genetalia and not just vents like chickens...

If it looks just like your first, band it's leg so you can compare as it gets older... if it looks different, make a note...

Usually there is a 'procedure' for sexing ducks at that age, but the trauma of seperating from that shell piece mighta made it pop out, idk though...

No this one is from my blue runner and my male f/w runner, they don't look alike. So far it looks blue and white. The little white thing was just above the umbilical and looked suspiciously like a boy ducks parts.

'If it looks like a drake...' lol... sorry, that just popped into my head... I'm betting that he's a boy then, since you do sound sure of it... just watch him as he gets older and expect for him to be a boy... if he turns out to be a girl, it'll be a pleasant surprise... :)
