My 2 welsh harlequinn ducks love sleeping in their little pond (it's just a little metal dish/pool? 9 in deep by maybe 20 inches long), but it's starting to get down into the 20s and 30s at night and I am worried the water may freeze around them and they would get stuck or trapped. I read online where people have had this happen. Yesterday, there was some floating ice and a section of water about the size of my duck where it looked like she may have slept last night. What should I do they love their pond!

Good to see that you care about your ducks. If they don't have food with them at night, they will be okay without water also for about eight hours. (no food without water) They may be annoyed with you, but I would rather the ducks be annoyed with me than in any danger.

I would remove the water at night until I could design and implement an ice-free waterer. Take a look at the archives here, there is much discussion about methods.

I dump our pool each evening and now remove food and water overnight. We don't put our ducks up until REALLY late and then they're out by 8:30 a.m.

Yep, i agree dump the little 'pond' mine(kiddy pools) are so frozen right now i cannot even stomp them open lol i had to pull feed/water tonight too we got too cold

Hi everyone!

Thank you for your advice and your quick responses! They are doing much better now after I tried dumping the pool over night and they don't seem to be too upset with me =)

Thanks again!
