I placed 11 eggs under our broody buff 5/18. Monday the 8th 4 hatched and 5 eggs were left, she had kicked out two earlier in the game that were bad. One of the last blue eggs I had under her exploded. I cleaned up the eggs and candled them. I can not hear peeping. Three I could not see anything in because they are so dark, one I could see right through. Cracked it open and it was just yoke, no baby. I cleaned out her dog pen, put fresh bedding in and she went back to sit on the remaining three. A few minutes later she left them to show the little ones how to scratch. It is 89 in the coop. She left them yesterday for a while when it was about 100 degrees and went back on them last night. Yesterday was suppose to be "hatch day" (21 days exactly). Question is how can I tell if the three that remain are viable? I can not hear peeping from them but they are solid. When do I just give up? Will she know what to do? I am just surprised that she did not kick that one out before it exploded. She knew the other two blue ones were no good. (maybe she was just hopeful since I only gave her 3 blue eggs) Any and all advise is appreciated. I washed them off with warm water as they were mostly covered in nasty goo. I hope I did not kill them. This is my first time with a broody hen. I got her a year ago in March. She seems to know what to do so I am just letting her handle it.

If all the eggs were put under the hen at the same time then it is quite likely that any unhatched eggs are not good. Hens can not tell if their eggs are good or not. Broody hens will set on light bulbs, golf balls, white rocks, or nothing at all. The eggs being bad and being pushed out of the nest is probably coincidence. Cute picture.
