Almost exactly a year ago we discovered Billie (an adult Pekin) not moving, starving in a local park on our daily walk. We had noticed her limping but at that point she was laying there starving. We brought her home and found a vet to treat her. She had a broken hip which amazingly he was able to splint. She still has a limp but gets along well enough for the much beloved house pet she has become. Last week she layed her first egg. It had a very soft shell so we gave her a drop of vitamin d on her feed and started supplementing with oyster shell. The next 2 eggs were perfect. Yesterday I noticed an odd formation that looked like egg shell in her swim pool. Then this morning she layed the egg that in the attached picture. I put the odd shell formation I found in the pool in the picture also. Any suggestions or ideas? Frankly I would prefer that she not lay eggs at all. I'm hoping we get her to go broody and quit laying.

Thanks for any assistance! Care

If you want her to stop laying, keep her inside her coop for a few hours more than usual. Ducks lay more when they are exposed to more light. When it is dark, they do not lay. This is their body's way of making sure they do not have babies in the winter when it is too cold and not enough food.

I am glad you rescued her. I am in the process of rescuing ducks from a park as well.
