Hi everyone! I am going to make this fast. I have a red heeler dog that kills chickens, we let the girls out today, and suddenly had to leave the house really fast, i normally put this dog in his cage, but tonight was so busy i didn't put him away. I came home and found him with something in the yard!!! He had one of the girls, but she was not dead! I punished him and put him away, but now i have this chicken with a big open gaping wound on her back! I need help! What do i do? Do i put meds on it? leave it alone and let it heal itself? I have put her in a little cat carreer with loits of shavings and food and water. PLZ respond ASAP!!!

Just clean the wound, gentl, with soap and water or whatever you have around. Put some Neosporin or similar on it -- anything antibiotic or antiseptic. Don't try to dress it. Keep her isolated and indoors, and hope. They can survive some awful wounds.

The only precaution is, don't put an topical med on a bird that contains a "caine" drug such as cetacaine or benzocaine. Otherwise, just use what you have. If you use Betadine or Peroxide, do dilute them. After the initial cleaning, it will probably only need some more Neosporin each day.

Good luck!

Many years ago something got my son's hen, leaving her with a large and deep puncture on her side. Because she was his I took her to the vet (I was the only one in the waiting room with a chicken). With no particularly special treatment other than basic clean care, she survived for several more years. Just make sure the other chickens have no access at all road her until she is completely healed. They will kill her.
Good luck,
