Help, I can't find my chicken health book, but I think my chicken prolapsed. Bloody egg, bloody vent, something sticking out, but I don't have any prep. H. Any other ideas. Please help!!

I've never dealt with a prolapse, but in lieu of Prep H, do you have any witch hazel? Chilled witch hazel will also help shrink tissues somewhat. Not sure what to tell you here-hopefully, someone with experience in this will come along. I'm sure the search function will bring up something, too.
Here is one:

Make sure the area is nice and clean before you start. You could try vaseline or KY jelly to replace the 'something' hanging out. To reinsert it, put vaseline on your index finger and 2nd finger (NOTE: I used two fingers on a turkey hen...you may only need one for a chicken hen). Fingers facing upward (palm up), gently push the stuff back in by pushing in and upward into the vent. You may have to hold it there gently for a short time for it to stay. If it comes back out, try again until it holds itself in. Prep H is best to reduce the swelling and I would typically use that over vaseline or KY jelly. Let us know how she's doing.

On a s side note, you may be able to 'fix' it now but hens that have this happen, it will typically happen again and again. This would be considered a cull to most, but if she's a pet just keep an eye on her moving forward and be prepared. Good luck.

The hen that I had prolapse, I washed carefully with cool clear water. Applied a large amount of honey and repositioned the prolapse. I had to do that a couple of times a day for 2 or 3 days.

Darkened cage, and reduced feed to help slow down egg laying. She is fine and returned to the flock. The only lasting effect that I have seen with her is that she molted later than all the other hens this year.

Ok, so this is where we are at. I ran to the store and got Preparation H, came home mixed up some saline, cooled it and squirted the area good. I guess stuff isn't hanging out so much as just looking totally swollen. I think she's a new egg layer. Then I added the Prep. H. She's been really good through all this. Nothing would go in and stay in, and since it's more swollen than anything I decided to just put the stuff on and put her in a cat carrier in the laundry room where it's really dark.

Then I came in and tried to finish dinner. Had to put the fire out in the oven. Ruined the rolls. My DH is all upset because we made this big dinner for my mom and his and his moms friend. They couldn't come because they are snowed in. So it was just us and my mom and a 17 lbs turkey. He got jeans for Christmas, and getting clothes is an unforgivible sin (spoiled brat should at least make me feel like I gave him a great gift even if I didn't). So add the chicken on top of all this and the fire, (couldn't find the extinguisher that was right in front of the bottom of the sink), it's been a pretty bad day.

I'm not sure how much more holiday I can take today.
