HELP!!! FAST@@ My Daughter Just steped on one of my chicks!!!

He is hurt bad!!! It looks like his yolk sack got shushed out! Not sure,b ut he is hurting! How do I put him down?

There are many methods. If it's only a few days old, the best method in my opinion is snipping their head off. I know it sounds grusome, but the FASTEST way is the best, and removing their head is fastest. If it bothers you, put him on a towel and cover him with part of that towel. Then, a good pair of scissors...I'm sorry you're having to do this.

Wrap him in a paper towel and snap his neck, do it fast and he won't feel it, then tend to your daughter.

I'm sorry to hear this - are you certain that his interior yolk sac is out? Unrepairable?

Cervical dislocation is considered a human euthanasia method, even by the AVMA. Rather than breaking the neck, you simply dislocate the connection between the head and the neck.

Cervical Dislocation

Cervical dislocation is considered a humane method of poultry euthanasia by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Use the following steps to perform a cervical dislocation:

1. Place the bird breast-down on a flat surface (or hold the bird against your hip).
2. Use one hand to hold both wings behind the bird's back.
3. Using your other hand, hold the head between your third and fourth fingers, with the third finger on the back of the chicken's head.
4. Sharply turn the head 90 degrees while at the same time pulling it firmly and quickly away from the body (in a motion like stretching the neck). See diagram below. You will feel the vertebra separate.
5. Hold the bird in this position until flapping stops.

I hated it , but I just cut off it's head.

It was hurting so bad, I could not wait any longer.

Lesson in life big foot vs. little chick; the big foot always wins!

Sorry trying to make humor out of a bad situation, my daughter is only 4 yr so she is heartbroken!

Aww I'm so sorry. You did the right thing, but I'm still so sorry for your and your sweet baby girl.

She might remember this always. I did something similar to a baby sparrow when I was young - only it stunned it, didnt kill it. It was very scarring for me and I remember it clearly to this day even though I was only 4. So be sure to tell her how much you love her, that she didn't mean to, and tell her all the other chickies are alive and that you're sure she'll take good care of them with you - and that she's important to you in taking care of them.

Not that I want to tell you how to do your job. /wink Obviously you're doing it wonderfully. But those are things that really helped me when I was that age and did the same.
