Hello, I’m new to the page so I hope this is the right way to ask questions & get advice. I’m new to keeping chickens and ducks and have had my current flock of birds for a few months now.

I found my absolute favourite of the lot, a young polish hen, dying today when I went out to feed them. She passed in my arms some time after finding her, and I’m so distraught over it. I have no clue how / why she died.

This little hen was the friendliest creature I’ve ever met. She would follow me around, come when called, sit happily in my lap and enjoy cuddles. She was the first to eat from my hand and I truly believe she loved me and the attention.

She started acting strange about a week ago. Still super friendly and overall her typical self. She was still eating, drinking and getting on with the others.

It all started a week ago when I found her laying flat down, partially on her side in the mud. The rain was really bad and she was very wet. I brought her inside, dried her off and warmed her up before putting her back in the coop for the night. While I had her inside I snipped some of her facial feathers, as she was struggling to see past her little signature polish bowl cut.

Following that day, I would find her in similar positions when out feeding them. She would be laying down, ever so slightly leaning on one side/wing, and seemed to struggle to get up. She would eventually, and some days she showed no trouble at all.

The night after putting her back from the rain incident, I found her trying to sleep in the duck’s area on the ground outside the coop, which she had never done before. She did it again the following two nights, and eventually I found she was struggling to make the jump onto the ramp to their coop, something she has never had difficulty with in the past. I wondered if maybe me trimming her feathers put her off balance somehow, but it just didn’t make sense.

When I went out to feed them all this afternoon, I found her on her back, feet in the air and on deaths door. I thought she had already died when I picked her up, but she hasn’t yet. She was definitely on her way out though. She kept convulsing slightly in my hands, her head lolling to one side and then the next moment upright. She would open and close her eyes at random intervals, to the point where I thought she had died, only for the next moment her to look at me.

I’m so upset over this, she was my absolute favourite and more a pet than anything. I’d hate to know I’ve done something wrong or missed something crucial.

Any advice would help, thank you and apologies for the long post.

I'm sorry to hear about your hen.

We can make guesses, but the best way to get a definitive answer about the symptoms you saw, is through testing/necropsy through your state lab. If you still have the body, refrigerate it and call your lab to make arrangements for analysis. https://www.metzerfarms.com/poultry-labs.html

This said, some of the symptoms you describe sound neurological. Marek's disease comes to mind. This is something you may want to look into.

Sorry for your loss. :hugs

thank you :)

and no i don’t have her body unfortunately, i buried her right after she passed. i couldn’t see an visible wounds / blood / signs of distress though
It's hard to know exactly what happened without doing a necropsy.
How old was she? When was the last time she laid an egg?

unfortunately i no longer have her body, i buried her after she passed. i looked into marek’s disease when first trying to figure out what was wrong. the struggling to stand is similar but none of the other symptoms.

is it possible to have a form of marek’s where it’s just struggling to stand ? she was eating, drinking, a healthy weight & her comb hadn’t collapsed. when she had her moments on the ground she definitely didn't seem paralysed, she could still move everything and was upright after a bit of coaxing / help

She was around 9/10 months. She hadn’t started laying yet as far as I could tell.

I know it’s a long shot trying to surmise what happened with such little information but I just thought I’d try and see if anything stood out to others.

I appreciate the help :)

I recently lost my smallest chick. Right at 3 months. We had a bad storm and a board hit the run. I think stress had something to do with it. She was fine the day before and when I went to check on them the next morning she was in the corner of the coop near the feeder. I picked her up and put her on a high roost hoping that would make her feel better. She flew down on her own but went to a corner. I walked towards her and she walked under the coop and sat down upright but her eyes kept closing. I got her out seeing she was going fast. Carried her in the house and tried to give her water with a dropper. Thought she swallowed it but she didn't. She sat with her beak flat on the floor and kept closing her eyes. Someone posted a video of one of their hens dying suddenly. When my little one died she did almost the same thing.(just so you know they were not mean or cruel about this it was on a chicken cam inside of the coop and they posted to help with sudden deaths) My other chicks seem to be fine and I bought them from a feed store that said they were treated for diseases before they were shipped. Watch your other chicks for any signs of the same thing. If none of them show any symptoms it could be stress. One wise chicken farmer said that sometimes they just die and then your heart breaks for a while.

thank you :)

Yes, struggling to stand can be a symptom of Marek's. A lot of people do report that the bird seems to keep their appetite.

Just seeing this and extending my condolences. I lost my favorite this morning... So my heart is grieving with you. I feel I can tell you as my husband told me - "she likely knew she was your favorite, that she was loved, and that she had the best life a chicken could hope for." Sending you a hug, Doll... I'm awful sorry about your loss.
