Hello! I want to hatch some eggs for the kids this year for them to be a part of it but we can only handle about 5 or so more chickens right now. Most places online have 12 minimums or something along those lines.

To add to the challenge, I want to get 5 different breeds just so they have different colors/etc.

Anyone have any ideas?

Local barnyard mix...get some great colors out of those.
What's your plan for the cockerels? I usually get 70% boys for the freezer. 50% would be great

I haven't had good success with having fertile eggs shipped to me so I started searching local classified ads (craig's list, etc). I found several local options that would let me buy any quantity I wanted. You could also look for local hatcheries that could sell you fertile eggs. I didn't think I had a hatchery in my area but a quick google search turned up a nice, family-run hatchery that was close enough to drive to.

The boys will go in the freezer. I have 10 girls already so for me, it's really about showing the kids the process and growth with the added bonus of having some girls at the end hopefully. A friend of mine is having me hatch the remainder of the incubator for himself so he said if I end up with too many boys, I can just have his.

Thanks. I have found a couple but they are very limited on eggs. I'll keep looking. I don't know why I didnt think of Craigslist
