I got 4 crested duck hatching eggs to see the progress with my 9yr old step-daughter. After doing a lot of research we candled the eggs after several days and could see heart beats in 2 of the eggs. After more candling we realised 1 was not fertile and when we cracked it open we were right- just yoke, another 1 also had a blood ring and was not developing. 2 eggs seemed to be doing ok until day 17 when I realised 1 of the eggs had not moved for a couple of days- we broke the egg open and it had died- I have attached a pic ....

400

Now on day 18 the other egg has stopped moving and I think it may be dead. I candled on day 15 and the duck was v energetic - now nothing :-( I have to say this has been a disappointing experience and just wondering what we did wrong?!!

successful hatching seems dependent on LUCK. Some people do everything by the book and have total failures, others ignore the eggs and get loads of chicks. Even when broody hens hatch eggs results can be dismal.
