Help - footing for coop/run?

ive read people use sand in thier coops and runs, and some people use shavings. i am still in the process of finishing my coop and run addition, but when i am done i figured i would put deep pine shavings on the floor in the coop, as well as a nest box or two, and some perches. the run that is attached is fully enclosed with chicken wire, but doesnt have a roof to block the weather. bad rain makes the ground in the run area wet, which will smell a bit. i dont think putting shavings down out there is a good idea because they will also get wet and smell. i guess my question is, do people usually have a roof on the outside run area to keep dry from rain? if not is sand a good idea or will that get equally as wet and a little stinky? just trying to set it up so its clean and will dry out quick to prevent smell.

My birds run for the coop when it starts raining. I would leave it bare, well it will become bare with them scratching. They will track in the mud and moisture on your shavings inside the coop but thats part of it.

I started out with the run uncovered but it rains a lot in florida and wet chicken stuff is stinky chicken stuff so I covered the top with a tarp and have a sand bottom. Much better. I figure if I have to replace the tarp every year or two that won't be too bad.

Covered run with sand, I'm convinced, is the way to go. Above grade, if it's not too late. By the way your perches are best made with 2x4s with the edges sanded off, laid so the chicks can set on the widest part. Have fun!

If you use chicken wire for your run, just be aware that it is not predator secure. It will keep your chickens in, but that's about it.

sand in the run will drain better and keep their feet cleaner, plus it gives them a sand bath area! Another good part about sand is they can use it as grit.
