Recently, I had a momma duck kill her ducklings too! I'm thankful for this thread because I had no clue that some first time moms are just bad at it. She had 8 eggs. One hatched and the duckling is healthy. After that, I kept finding open eggs with the shell removed and the duckling within hours of hatching, dead inside the membrane. She was obviously trying to help them hatch. I don't know if she felt the movement, heard the pecking from the inside or both, but these babies were were working their way out of the egg at the point when she was doing this. It was heartbreaking to see that everyday! She had plenty of calcium available.
I finally had to remove the duckling from her because she placed it in the kiddie pool and left it to drown.
Any chance she can be a good duck mom again someday or should I prevent her from becoming broody?

Thanks y'all! Monica

Well I had a Muscovy duck who was sitting on her first nest was a devoted broody but when hatch started she killed one duckling before it could make it all the way out of the egg and was in the process of killing the next one but I was able to get it before she injured it too badly. I swore I’d never let her brood again but she was the first one to go broody the next year so I let her and was prepared to take the ducklings as they hatched but she was a wonderful mama with this clutch of 4. So you just never know you will have to decide if you want to give her another chance and be prepared to intervene if necessary.

Were other Ducks allowed close to the nest?

Give her another chance. If this happens again, well, probably not a good idea to let her hatch, though it she is too is at incubating, let her do that, just removed the ducklings when they pop internally and hatch them in an incubator.
