Wow, on reading this thread I was encouraged that I am not the only crazy one out there! My son had a severe TBI (at 15) almost 5 years ago and that year I decided to get my chickens to have something happy to keep my mind busy. They have been a joy to us but lots of people do not understand why I would take on this additional work when I have so much else going on. Now my son will finally be going home from the nursing home ( he is not better, just aging out of the children's home) in March and I have ordered two goslings to arrive in April. I can't wait and it is such a joy to have this to think about when other things are not going so well. Sort of a celebration of life. When I can bring my son home I put his wheelchair in front of the chickens so he can watch them do the silly things they do. Now I see that there is someone else who thinks like I do! I do hope you get at least two goslings to hatch! Good luck! I am always winding up with one chick when I hatch. Then they are lonely.
Yes Ms Ellen you are NOT alone. My life has been a struggle. Between my terminal illness and multiple trips to the hospital and my son who will be 19 in a few days and his bipolarism and heart condition my life is a bag of mess. I am a city girl from California (Los Angeles) but now live in Missouri on 10 acres and people think I am crazy because I have one chicken who waits for me to hand feed her. She is my baby girl. I love her so. I love them all. They give me such joy. I couldn't imagine my life without them. So if you are crazy then so am I. We can be crazy together lol.

It helps so much to have something else to think about off health issues.

I wish you luck with the eggs left. But if it does not work out as Pete says there is always more time and a better time in the Spring.
Do you know the goslings have to be kept in a brooder for awhile after they hatch. Babies can not take the cold weather. I bring my babies in the house into my bathroom for their first week. Then as they can go out into the garage with a heat lamp in a container. I have a horse water metal troft to put them in and attach the heat lamp on the troft on one side so if they get too warm can go to the other side. This way you can bond them with humans to love you and you can talk and cuddle with them.

Geese are sweet, wonderful birds, so very smart too. I enjoyed them with my dad many years, and have my own now. (shhh i told him they are his hehe, I care for both my parents full time and they live with us now) They are a legacy of my family, my grandmother always had Geese, even in her 80s. I do recommend the same, a foam base will help her not crack the eggs and several inches of of bedding. I wanted to mention, Dads geese usually had 1 or 2 "bad nests" before they hatched goslings. It was heartbreaking, but i really believe its just part of their maturing process.I have Embden also and my gander, big G is at least 20 pounds. They have the prettiest eyes i have ever seen. the smallest goose, Angel is probably 13 pounds or more. Mine were April babies, no eggs yet, but my Big G has chosen my african goose WeeWee as his mate. (I have 2 African too) The geese are my best friends, my alarms for predators, and my helpers when i do the outside chores. They insist on sampling any of the food before its rationed out to the other animals

WeeWee is my favorite bird out of all my fowl, she is my lap goose. If i don't pick her up every morning, she will tug my shirt and weeweewee...weeweewee? til i do

.

We aren't crazy. Its those who haven't/won't have had a warm lovable goose in your lap snuggling you that are missing out.
