We lost one of our 3 month old pilgrim ganders last night to a sudden illness. We noticed he was hanging back a bit from the rest of the flock and seemed a little slow, but no lethargic, just not real energetic and not keeping up with the rest of them. We picked him up to check him out and he started cough and spitting up a clear rust colored fluid (maybe had blood in it)? He died within about 15 minutes and after death even more of the fluid poured out of his mouth. I am assuming he likely drown from the fluid in his lungs, but I have not idea what may have caused it given the sudden onset and the absence of any other symptoms. I am concerned because we have 7 other geese as well as ducks and guineas. I have googled and searched the forums and haven't found anything that matches his symptoms. Does anyone have any idea why he died? Should I be concerned he may have been contagious?

Sorry about your goose :(

Could he have suffered any type of internal trauma? Somethin that may not be visible externally?

I don't know how to tag but ms. Lydia and Ravynscroft may be able to help more!

He had a foot injury prior to this. He somehow cut the webbing between two toes, but we took him to the vet for stitches (for all the good it did) and that was completely healed. The vet had us give him an anti inflammatory and antibiotics, he has been off of those for about a week. I don't know if those could have caused a problem? If he had internal injuries, I don't know how he would have gotten them.

Sometimes, stuff happens with no answers. Could be internal injury, something it ate, a toxin...Without an autopsy, you won't know, and having done one with a sudden death, and everything looked normal and healthy...and that doesn't include anything like official vet autopsy, and little is known about waterfowl anyway. Then there are a few things bacterial things, west nile,etc....I have a mystery effecting 3 of my geese , and I think it is either West nile or a toxin... (perhaps grain related)...
