Help, Gosling with eye opening not over eyeball. Pics!

Well it is starting to open it's eyes more, but there is a strange flap of tissue, like a second eyelid that is under the eyelids, and when the baby blinks it slowly retracts over the eye. Like sharks that have that 2nd eyelid for swimming.

That looks swollen for sure. My guess is it's edema, or extra fluid in the tissues of his head and in his eyelids. That "extra" eye lid is just swollen membranes from the extra fluid. When I've had patients get lots of edema or IV fluids I see "extra" looking membranes in their eyes that go down when the extra fluid is expelled.

As far as it being something wrong to cause the edema, maybe it was the position within the egg, and circulation wasn't so hot those last few days cramped up in there, thus fluids pooled in the head. If it's not "something wrong" but just positioning, the fluid will regulate into the rest of the body now that he's out and not so cramped up.

Give it time. We used to hatch geese and there always seemed to be a weak one in the batch. Sometimes it takes them a bit longer and amazingly they can end up your biggest healthiest one. I am sure others would frown at how often I will give sugar water to a weak chick or injured bird but it always seems to help. Might give him a little pick me up.

Unfortunately it started having trouble breathing last night, looked as though it was gasping, so Hubby put it out of it's misery. I felt soo bad, but I couldn't watch it gasp for air, knowing if I went to bed it would probably slowly die, so Hubby made it fast.

The other gosling is very happy to be in with the chicks, and Hubby had named her Lucy.

Awww, I'm sorry

It obviously had a defect, I'm no vet but it sounds like it's heart was bad (edema and gasping for air). You did the right thing. Good luck with the other gosling and chickies
