Help! had peritoneal fluid removed, & on antibiotics… was better now worse…

Thanks Emma for hanging in there with me.

"Loudy" *may* have turned the corner for the better - much to my surprise. I left her in the garden today with water dishes and plates of berries and grapes and seed placed strategically around the garden in hopes that she would eat and drink something - especially since it was supposed to be pretty hot today. I hadn't read your post about impacted or sour crops, but I also instinctively massaged it a little before I left this morning. By the way, she doesn't have bad breath… so maybe it wasn't sour crop… and maybe the massage helped!

This evening, I picked up some electrolytes after work and cooked up a package of multigrain rice and soaked it in the electrolytes and probiotics I had - and boy did she chow down! She also ate a fair amount of greens. I was flabbergasted. Last of all, she had some small but semi solid poops that were no longer yellow. What a relief.

I don't think she's out of the woods yet, because each evening she seems better but then she seems worse again in the morning. So based on that, she's sleeping in a room off the kitchen tonight since its cold outside and also noisier due to all the idiots setting off firecrackers and M-80s. She wasn't too sure about being inside but seems to have settled down for the night… hopefully she won't be scared in the morning when she wakes up!

I'll report back - hopefully all will be well in the morning and I'll be able to get to work on time.

Thankfully, Loudy continues to appear better!

My only question is - will her body be able to reabsorb the additional fluid in her abdomen that came in after it was originally drained? Will it be enough to run the full course of antibiotics if all else seems well...

Thanks! A bit worried about doing it myself… and don't know where to get the supplies…does a vet have to prescribe them? I'd just as soon let her body do it if there's no harm in that….

I am sort of having the same problem with my duck. She is a rescue that I have had for 4 months that only laid one egg a in may and that one was broken. At first I thought she wasn't laying due to stress of a new home but then I noticed her belly getting big. I took her to the vet and she said she was full of fluid and gave her antibiotics and extra calcium. She looks better but didn't lose any weight. She has also been acting fine throughout this. Very happy duck. I am bringing her back in on Thursday for a checkup and hope she is ok. The vet didn't recommend any diet change or electrolyte treatment. I'm wondering if I should try. If I missed it, what was the brand you used?

Hooper Dooper - I'm so sorry - I was afraid of that... what did they find out? Was it egg yolk peritonitis?

I have such a soft spot in my heart for ducks. I had a duck from kindergarten through 7th grade....they are wonderful creatures.

She had a problem where the eggs go the wrong way and get stuck in the ovaries. She then had a big sack of fluid that caused her stomach to swell up. They removed all that and sterilized her and she actually made it through the surgery but her heart stopped while waking up. We only had her for 5 months but she was great. We lost our first girl to another illness and this one we adopted so our Indian runner would not be alone. We keep them as pets and put duck diapers on them and they sit on the couch with us to watch tv. I know it sounds crazy but it's what we do and they seemed to look forward to it. I was able to find a 3 month old girl who is adapting nicely. Sorry to give you my whole story but I did. And a picture too..
