Help! Hard white substance inside chickens eye

Hot compresses..over and over is my suggestion. I know that can't be easy with a chicken but you need to soften it up. It may take a while. Hopefully someone else will come along and have a better suggestion.

Edited to add: I just read you can put castor oil in eyes...I am heading out to work..but some type of oil would probably soften it up faster...I'm sure you don't have castor oil but it's an anti-inflammatory it says, if you could get some at a health food store, maybe.

Thankyou for the advice, I will look into getting some caster oil :)

Hi all, I have a chicken with the same issue, she had it in both eyes, we have been bathing the eyes and one eye we were able to get all of the gunk out. Unfortunately the other eye has some stuck, I dare not pull it out in case I damage something. I tried pulling very gently but is firmly in there. Any advice would be awesome, thankyou :)
Is there a bad odor around the face? Coryza and MG, chronic respiratory diseases can cause swollen eyes with gunk and puss. The longer it stays in there, the harder it is to get it out. Are you treating with an antibiotic? Squeezing can sometimes get the pus out, and there are videos of getting pus out, and using an instrument to clean it out. Flush eyes with saline eye wash, and once you work on the eye, use a dab of Terramycin eye ointment twice a day. You might find it would be good to post this in a new thread, instead of this old one, so that more will read and offer help. Here are some really graphic videos that might help:

It is important to always have an extra pair of hands to hold the chicken’s head still. That is why I believe it is important and much easier to try and get the pus out early on. I really have never dealt with this problem, but it seems that many of these eye infections go on for weeks and even months. Many chickens lose their eyes or the sight if the infection lasts a long time.

Can you provide a link about the Castor oil?
I would not put Castor oil directly in the eye. While I have read articles that it can be used around the eyes (on humans) everything I have seen says to be careful not to get the oil in the eye.

I was rushing out the door to work yesterday...and I am currently doing the same thing so can't find the link at the moment but this opthamologist used it. He's not recommending if it's not sterile but of course use a good product.
https://www.aao.org/eye-health/ask-ophthalmologist-q/castor-oil-in-eyeI used it for a long time every night to rub on my eyelashes .

Thanks for the links!
So you would not want to go to walmart and grab a bottle of Castor Oil off the shelf and use it in the eye (Castor oil is commonly found with the laxatives and used a such).
The castor oil briefly mentioned in each link that is used in the eye either comes from an ophthalmologist, are sterile or would be marketed as pharmaceutical grade to be used in the eyes. I do see where you can order oil for the eyes, a consumer would need to be careful when choosing the right one - some are marketed to actually go in the eye, while others are to be used around the eyes according to the warning on the labels.

Personally, I believe I would just stick with using an ophthalmic ointment like Terramycin:)

I was just suggesting it as a lubricant to help get out the hard white stuff out of the eye...being anti-inflammatory was only mentioned in passing. However now I want to make my own castor oil eye drops.
