I hatched out my second batch in the incubator. 27 of the 30 eggs hatched, 1 of the 3 died before getting completely free but did more than pip. 2 of the 3 never pipped.

my problem chick is 1 of the 27. she had some problems getting free of her shell, I think that the humidity dropped too low, she was the last chick to hatch. after several hours, I helped by chipping a little bit of shell free from her. her feathers are matted and stiff. I bathed her in warm water in an attempt to free her feathers, and it might have helped a little, but not much at all. It's like the inside of the shell dried on her and I don't know how to get it off.

She is active, chirping, drinking, standing, walking around, and eating. the other chicks immediately go after her so she's in an "isolation" box inside the brooder.

if anyone can think of anything to help me help her, i would greatly appreciate it!!

thanks,
michelle

Not sure if this will help. I have only hatched eggs once. And not sure if this would work for you as well.

I had one chick where part of the shell stuck to it's back. I kept her in the bathroom where I could keep the room humid and "warmer" ( turn the hot shower on as needed to add more moisture and heat to the air). I used a q-tip dipped in warm water and regularly kept the cleaning the shell and goop until it finally came off. It was a long process of wetting the shell and trying to get the sticky stuff underneath the shell wet and cleaned with q-tip while keeping the bathroom warm and wet (about 2hours). But she is doing great now.

Just don't force the shell off. And also, I took breaks for both the chick and me, but don't let it dry back out.
