Hello! So I have a chick that pipped internally saturday & externally last night but didn't break the shell completely you could just see where it had been pecking at it but failed to break entirely I slightly pulled a bit of the shell back where the pip was- so it could breathe and I put coconut oil on the exposed membrane. This morning I checked and it was the same way I left it. It looks like some slight bleeding and the chick is peeping and moving but has still not came out. This is a staggered hatch so I'm not exactly sure what day it's on but I'm thinking around the lines of day 20. This is a pure bred serama and i've heard they typically hatch on day 19. All of my other seramas have hatched on day 18 or 19. Should I continue to assist or leave the egg under mama to continue to hatch. I'm not sure if it's ready to come out. Another serama chick I had internally pipped but never externally pip and it ended up dying in the shell-that's why I chose to give it a hole to breathe. Also I don't have access to an incubator so that wouldn't be a good option for me.

Chip back part of the shell very slowly and carefully. If it bleeds dab it with a dry paper towel and put it back under the hen. Check again after 6 hours or so.

Okay so I just pulled some of the shell back and it started bleeding so I put it back. I will check again around 6 and see if anything changes.

It generally takes 24 hours from the external pip for the chick to absorb the remains of the yolk and blood. I wouldn't interfere until that amount of time has passed. The only danger is the hen abandoning the nest to take care of the older chicks (if you have left them with her). Offer her some food and water right by the nest if she does still have the older chicks as they'll be starting to get hungry.

She doesn't have the chicks. I have them with a hen that just hatched a few days ago. It's a staggered hatch so i'm having to separate them so she continues to sit on the remaining eggs. I'm not going to interfere anymore. I'm going to give it plenty of time!

He or she made it out of the shell overnight! So excited this baby came out healthy!
