Folks, I know a lot of people don't like to use antibiotics, and some don't know how to use antibiotics. And the reasons are as plentiful as a star-lit sky at night.

There are gram negative infections, and gram positive infections (this is basic stuff, folks -- not a medica).

If symptoms are not diminishing when antibiotic treatment is being given, it could be that the wrong antibiotic is being given. It is true that antibiotics won't help a virus, but a virus causes secondary infections that can be very serious and antibiotic is required. And the culprit could be a different gram infection which would require a lab to determine, or a really good Vet.

We hear a lot about overuse of antibiotics, and some have said antibiotics are not working any more due to overuse. I organized volunteers (with the help of a medical doctor) and we fanned out purchasing prescription antibiotics of all classes. Those were taken to a top notch lab for investigation.

What we found was stunning.

The antibiotics that were being hyped as "not working due to overuse" in fact either had no antibiotic in the tablets or capsules, or so little antibiotic that it was completely ineffective. The stuff was milk sugar.

The media also did a seperate investigation and found the same results we did, although ours was much more comprehensive.

With all due respect to the various opinions, to be really correct in medicating your birds, consult with a Vet you know and trust.
