HELP HELP HELP! Chicken Run in CT

Hi Everyone. We are building our coop and we will have an inclosed run. We are debating on what the bottom should be (dirt, sand, etc). I have read bad things about sand for this area. Also my son has asthma so not sure if that plays a role. Please let me know the best alternative. We need to order it soon!
