I am a brand new chicken owner and am concerned about my hen that laid her first egg yesterday. She is approx. five months old and she is the first of six chickens to lay an egg. The egg was well-formed and was totally clean with no blood inside or out - there was a full yolk and what appears to be a second unformed yolk. This morning I discovered bright pinkish blood in the coop under where she'd been roosting. I followed her around and she has been excreting more blood this morning. She acts fine otherwise. I looked at her vent and it is clean. The person that I spoke to at the farm store where I got her said this did not sound normal but had no advice. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don't know what's wrong with your girl. But here's a bump! Maybe an expert will come and help.

Is she pooping blood or are you certain she's excreting it?

I tried doing some searching for you and I found a couple links. I hope someone with experience may help:

Should I worry about this blood on the egg today?

Soft egg, Dribble of blood, any advice?

If it was a double yolker - that means bigger egg. I wonder if she could have tore something pushing it out? Are any of the other chickens bothering her? She may need to be isolated for a little while if so....

It turned out that her first egg coincided with her acquiring coccidiosis along with three other of the birds before I managed to figure out what was wrong. I've been treating them for four days now and all seem much better. Thank you for your help!
