This morning my chicken halfway laid a hard shelled egg. It looks like her vent is crusted to the egg by blood and dries fluids. We have been soaking her in warm water for about 30min and we lubricated the vent with petroleum jelly. Please, please, someone offer me some insight?! All of the local vets are closed because it is Sunday so I can't even simply call for advice. Will this egg come out just by soaking? Do we need to try to push back the vent to release the egg? Will her vent rip because it seems pretty tightly crusted?
Thanks you!!

Sincerely ,

Panicked first time chicken keeper

UPDATE: She passed the egg!! We moved her into the bathtub with slightly warmer water and that seemed to do the trick. It looks like the vent is putting itself back into order but we are going to use some hemorrhoid creme just in case. One final concern is that she has some dried poop that is stuck on the walls of her vent. While she was soaking we were trying to get it off with no avail. Is this something to be concerned about?

Stay calm, give her a tums or calcium tablet, break into pieces and give orally(wrap in cheese or meat if she will not take it,i use cheese)this usually helps pass egg within approx an hour, keep her warm/quiet/calm and in a dark location.

After she passes egg, check for a prolapse as this can happen with what she is experiencing.

Just read she passed egg.
