so I have 4 Dominique chickens (1 roo and 3 hens) and earlier today when I went to check for eggs I noticed diarrhea on the ground. This was the first time I have seen this but I brushed it off. Then I come back and see it again! Are my chickens sick? To much protein I heard can cause this. I filled their feeder with cracked corn and layer mash this time ( this is the first time I’ve done it) other then that, they seem to be acting pretty normal. Someone help

Too much protein will not cause diarrhea, especially if you are feeding layer feed. They need the 16-17% protein for laying, and the balance of nutrients to be healthy. Corn just has carbs, 1/2 the protein they need, and none of the other vitamins, minerals or nutrients. Corn or scratch should be very limited, and is not needed at all, though many of us give a little treat once in awhile because they love it.

Summer hot weather causes increased thirst and drinking more fluids causes runny poops more often. You can take a few droppings into a local vet for a fecal float to rule out worms and coccidiosis. The black shiny poop in the one picture looks like some cecal poop mixed into the rest. How is the hen acting? Make sure all the water is shaded.

Are you saying you suddenly changed their diet? You say it’s not hot but have you noticed the water disappear faster than normal? Lastly have you checked the poo for anything in it?
