Help! Hen sick!!

I'm sorry for your loss

I am not sure what exactly she had though,. For the flock, maybe more information or anything out of the ordinary.

Could there be a poisoning? Can you take a temperature on another one?

We had 2 younger chickens die a week ago. One had a twisted neck and could stand upright. I thought it could be wry neck so I gave her vitamin E and an egg yolk. She sadly passed also. The other younger chicken had a growling noise and staggered some. I gave him premoxil 550 in pill form and he improved a lot. He was walking normal and was eating and drinking like normal again. A few days later, I found him dead after I thought he was recovering well. I’ve had 3 different chickens die with different symptoms so I’m not sure if they are just coincidental or if they all died with the same illness.

Do they have any access to mouse poison? Even something forgotten in an old outbuilding from 20 years ago? Not sure if it is the same in birds but in mammals it causes bleeding issues (bruising, swelling and masses, blood in urine, feces, vomit…). Just wondering with the combination of pale comb (anemia or shock) and strange neck mass. The comb and diarrhea could also be internal parasites (coccidia or worms). Not sure on the others, any chance you could cut them open and peak inside (necropsy)?

I forgot to mention I treated them with corid about 2 weeks ago for 5 days. Should I treat them again with corid? I hadn’t noticed any blood in their poop other than occasional intestinal lining. I also thought about doing a necropsy if another dies. It’s all just upsetting me because I’m a new chicken owner, and it feels like I am doing everything wrong.

Also, with me being a new chicken owner, I wasn’t aware that I was supposed to quarantine new birds before adding them to the flock. I added some 10 week old chicks in with my other chicks. I realize now how stupid that was and didn’t do my research. They had been mixed in with the other chicks for about a month and everyone was doing great until recently. That’s when 2 of my original chicks died and then one of my big hens died. None of the new chicks I got have been sick or died. It could be because they brought a sickness in. I hope that’s not the case, but I wish I could figure out why all my chickens are dying in different ways.

It does sound that the other chickens may have brought an illness in. I had chickens about a decade ago and introduced other chickens. And my original chickens were very sick and dying. think that too was my problem

I had no chickens for several years after that.

Now, I have a small flock and they have never been around any other birds and they do seem they are healthy.

It's a hard lesson.

But, you never know.

Thank you for your time. It is definitely a learning experience and a mistake I won’t make again. I am currently incubating some eggs now and will give them vaccines when they are born and keep them away from everyone for a while.
