Help! Hen trying to lay egg..

I took her to a friend last night for help and when we got there there was a tear in the tissue/lining that was enclosing the egg. Imagine the egg being pushed out while still enclosed in the lining. THere was a tear in that lining so we got the egg out, pushed her uterus/"stuff"/insides back in through the vent. As soon as I got home again 10 minutes later it had fallen out. It is draining really bad and she is wobbling around the backyard. I really don't know what to do. I left my friends house last night with hopes that the worst was over but now I'm not so sure...

Keep her inside and in the dark so that she does not keep laying eggs- the dark will keep her from laying. Also it is important to keep her separate from the other chickens so they don't peck at it and pull her insides out. Keep pushing the tissue back in and leave her in the dark, provide food and water of course- you can also feed her extra protein like scrambled or boiled mashed egg. I hope she gets better!

Curious to know how is your hen doing by now? I feel such pain to know what she's been going through...So sorry to hear!
Can you take her to a vet at this point? Not sure if there's a way to "discourage" her from trying to lay again for the time being, until she is somewhat better....

Im not really sure how she is... She is draining a lot but acting somewhat normal. She is walking a little more wobbly but eating, drinking, pecking about, etc. This morning my husband thinks she was squatting a little. This would be the day for her to lay again if she followed an every other day schedule. I still don't know what to do for her. Thanks for asking...

I hope she has a better time next egg...
my chicks are only 7 weeks and I am hoping my girls don't run into this problem. Any idea how common prolapsing is?

If you aren't already, you really should be keeping her in a darkend quiet area so she can heal. The dark whill help discourage her from laying again until she's healed. If the other chickens see any red/blood/tissues/etc - they can and will peck at it and can kill her. I've seen on here people have had chickens peck the feathers/skin/eyes/everything else right off of an injured bird. I had a hen that was just weak - and the others pecked her head until she died while I wasn't home. There was no skin left on her head. They can be quite vicious and intolerant of illness/weakness of other birds.

The drainage could be poop if she hasn't eaten much - but it could also be an egg that broke inside her while the other one was blocking her vent. If that is the case, it will cause infection and you'll need to remove the broken shell before another egg starts to move through. It might also be drainage from an infection from the egg blockage/tear.

If it was me, I'd have her separated and giving her a course of antibiotic - and would be researching on the best way to remove broken shells or check for broken eggs inside her. Is there a vet in the area that will check her for you at a reasonable cost ? That would be your best bet at this point I think.

You can try rubbing a small amount of preparation H or Honey on her vent to help reduce swelling and to keep it from prolapsing.

It could just be one of those things where she has a reproduction tract defect - and she just isn't going to do well - it could be a freak thing that just happened ... and won't happen again.

I hope she gets better though ... poor girl !
