Help, hen was attacked!

You already got some good advice! I second the suggestions Eggsessive made. Keep her in a quiet area, maybe a dog crate covered with a towel except for one side. Make sure no drafts or cold, water and water with some electrolytes available. Offer some higher protein food like scrambled eggs, tuna, mealworms and wet her chicken feed to make it easier for her. It’s going to take a while for her to heal. Hopefully she doesn’t have internal injuries and won’t go into shock. Sending good vibes and thoughts your way, keep us posted! Hope your daughter is okay

Eggcessive, do you think I should try to get the Blu-Kote off and then apply the Verticyn? Or just spray it over the Blu-Kote??

Just spray the Vetericyn over it. You would never get it (the BluKote) off—it contains gentian violet a blue dye. It will where of eventually. BluKote is a good disinfectant for minor wounds or for hiding, just not for deep wounds, but it won’t hurt anything. It just stings, from the alcohol in it.

I had a young Spanish white face hen that was attacked by an adult rooster and it tore a hole in her neck that looked similar to that. I brought her inside and we put some Neosporin on it to help seal it and clean it. I also put her under a heat lamp since her back feathers had been completely ripped out. I hope your girl makes it.

Just wanted to give you a bit of hope. If there is no infection she may recover and be just fine, there is a very good chance. Keep it clean and do as suggested. Picture of one of my hens that had a similar injury, picture was taken at 3 to 3.5 weeks after it happened. I used veterycin and neosporin and kept her crated until it was healed up. Picture below, feather are just starting to come in. She looks completely normal now.

Good luck for her. I hope she heals up. I know what it's like to have a tenderhearted daughter - mine was recently in tears at the prospect that one of ours is likely a cockerel.

As mentioned, continue to treat as you are.
I would also recommend some extra nutritional support with Poultry nutri-drench and a wet mash made out of her feed. Make sure you keep the wound moist. I've read good things about coating wounds like that with manuka honey.
Not sure what manuka honey is, but honey in it's self is very effective in healing. My mare got her rump split open by one of my other horses and ointment the vet gave was not healing it well, owner of farm recommended honey and she healed great! Good luck with your feathered baby.

Personally I would not use honey. While I've heard many good things about it, where I'm at, we have LOTS of ants, and the honey would surely attract the ants.

Just wanted to give everyone an update on Oreo, she is doing so much better!! She is healing rather quickly and we've been taking her outside a little bit at a time and she is loving it, she hates being stuck inside the house, lol!! But just wanted to let y'all know, she is doing extremely well and hopefully, she'll be well enough to go back out before long!!
