My Ancona hen has been acting funny for the past week. Not laying eggs and the eggs she was laying the week prior were soft and breaking. I uped her calcium and food but she has been standoffish and been staying in the coop. Today she seemed better and ran around outside like normal and laid an egg. She lifted her wing up and I noticed a black spot so i went and grabbed her. Under both wings she has about an 1 1/2 inch gash from what I believe is the roosters spurs from mating. Fits right where he would have been. How can I help Annie out? We have had all 13 hens and the 1 rooster right at a year now. Got them when they were 3 days old. We trimmed the spurs on the rooster today realizing how big they had gotten and knowing he is hurting his girls. What can I do to help Annie the Ancona heal?

Apply antibiotic ointment, keep her away from the rooster until healed, and make sure that she does not get fly strike. Such injuries take time to heal, but do heal. In addition to trimming his spurs, trim his toenails. If he is a large rooster, this may continue to happen.

If you cannot fix the over-mating issue, you could purchase or make hen saddles that protect their backs. If you google it, there's a bunch of information. If he's that big, you will likely have more issues though.

I actually purchased those last week because other hens had bare backs. This one didn’t have a bare back so I didn’t put on her. And I’m afraid to put on her now because I don’t want it rubbing the wound
