It’s day 16 and for some reason the humidity levels in the incubator are going nuts today. Started at 30 then I added water as usually do and it jumped to over 60, then dropped to 50 then 40 and 30 again. I added water and it jumped up to about 65. Settling now at 55 ish but I don’t understand why it’s doing this now when has been steady for the last weeks. I candled to check and the chick is doing great . Gave a big kick that showed a whole foot! The air cell seems good too. Should I be worried ? Never done this before. Only have one egg!

It should be fine--humidity averages out. Just keep any eye on the air cell and adjust as needed.

Will you be getting some companions for your lone chick? Chickens are flock birds, and are very unhappy without other chickens to be with. Chicks will even die of loneliness. If you raise it alone, be prepared for it to peep all day and night.

Well. To be honest it’s such a huge suprise! We bought eggs off the hedge and my 8yr old was convinced could be chicks. So we made a home incubator. Required a lot of work ! Three eggs. After 5 days an experienced person said only one
Was fertilised. I then swapped the lunch box type incubator for the above one I managed to borrow. I’ve become very attached ! I have read a lot about single chicks. I know it’s not ideal and we did have a person lined up who breeds chicken to take the chicken when Too big for us but I can’t see myself giving it up now.! But have no room for 2 chickens . I do have a rabbit . Lol. Stranger relationships have formed. I have been offered a chick to borrow but that’s almost more cruel. I have a lot of spare tome at the moment so can give it lots of attention. Have the brooder and electric hen all set up: a stuffed toy was suggested

It’s now 42% so will Likely run low over night. Should I top up and risk rocketing again or risk a low humidity

Generally you will have more problems from high humidity than low. I frequently don't top mine off until it hits 25%.

Ok. Running at 55 but as it’s lock down tomorrow and had been averaging 40-50 over last week and air cell looks good I’m not too concerned . Thanks for your help
