I have my 2 crested polish in a large pen, with my frizzle. The polish will be 18 wks tomorrow. All 3 of them are pullets! 1 of the polish has turned mean, I can't stand not knowing what to do! She has hurt the other polish, and is trying to do in the frizzle! Yesterday morning when I let them out of there house, all 3 seemed fine! Except the mean one. was going after the other 2. I went down a few hours later to take everybody some treats! This is when I noticed something was wrong with the 1 polish, she had a noticeable limp, and trouble standing! I picked her up and checked her over good, for any sign of open wounds. I found nothing. When I put her back down, the other polish jumped her again. Then she jumped on the poor frizzle! I am afraid the hurt polish isn't going to make it, I put her in a box with pine shavings, and put her on my enclosed back porch. She is barely able to get up, or move at all. I have a little water in there for her, I was afraid to put much, for fear she would fall in it in the night and not be able to raise her head. I love all my chickens, but right now I hate that mean polish. any ideas why she has turned so mean? And please if you have any suggestions about how to help my injured polish, the vet around here doesn't deal with poultry! What would you do if you were me and had the mean Polish? Could this aggression be B/C she is sick, I don't know what to do!

sorry you're post got missed earlier today. How is the injured bird doing?

As to the mean bird, I would move her away from the flock until you can figure out what is going on.

Hopefully some of the experts will chime in on this and you'll get some answers.

that is so weird, my polish hens are very meek, my polish rooster is another story!! how big is the pen you have them in? do they have grass to eat, or scratch grains to pick at? I don't know what would make a hen mean all of the sudden, she is too young to go broody, I have a slw hen who chases the goats out of the barn cause she wants to set on the egg that my barred rock lays every day in the manger.
do you have a rooster for them?
hopefully someone will help with this problem or have some ideas. I hope your hen is ok, I had 3 white crested black polish hens and lost 1 of them and I was really ticked.

My heart is broke! The injured polish is eating and drinking fine, he just can't seem to stand up and walk! I am afraid he might have brain damage! I hold him and feel for anything unusual in his legs or wings, when I stretch his legs out strait he seems to not be in any pain! He keeps his toes curled up tight when I pick him up, is this normal?

As for the mean polish, she was always so sweet, both of them were! They were raised in the brooder together, if I took one out when I went to clean the brooder, before I got the other one in there they would sound like I was killing them!

They have a large pen, it used to have my 3 ducks in there, with a pool and a house. I'm not good with measurements, but this will give you an idea as to the size of it.

I pick them fresh grass daily to eat, plus they get frozen spinach and broccoli stuff like that for treats. I have them on medicated chick grower crumbles.

My poor frizzle misses the injured polish so much it is so sad. When the injured polish goes to eat, he is always looking behind him. I think he is watching for the mean girl! The mean polish reminds me of a greedy dog! if the frizzle or injured polish would go to get a drink or eat, she would run them off! Or jump on them. She even came at me once.

I am so at a loss, I don't know what to do for the injured polish! Or what to do with the mean one. My sister thought maybe meany was wanting a roo. She had thought about taking her, and putting her with her polish, she has a polish roo. Until she seen meany in action!

As for now, I am going to keep Bogie my injured polish on my back porch, so I can just run out and check on him any time day or night! I am hoping, with rest and not much movement he may get better. I just wish I knew something else I could do to help her.

Thanks for caring.

Glad the chicken is ok for now.

Was the injured Polish sick at all before the meaness from the other started? Sometimes they will go after anyone that is ill.

When you've observed the behavior have you tried inserting your self as the dominate? Instead of rushing in and grabbing the injured.. chase down the agressor grab her up and hold her upside down by her legs. This is what people recommend for an aggressive roo so I'm guess it might work for a hen.

[ I also am having a problem with my Araucana rooster and a bufforphington rooster picking on, chasing and I guess pecking on my young rhode island red young rooster. He got caught in the gate and I thought he was dead. I was afraid to pick him up but when I did and he didn't move and it sure scared me. He finally opened his eyes and I held him in my arms and gave him kisses and petted him. I have put him in a bird cage with food and water and the wood shavings on the bottom for a comfortable nesting bed inside my horse tack room with windows open for plenty of fresh air. He drank 1/2 of a cup of water in the cage when I put him in there. The other 2-3 roosters can't get to him. He felt kind of damp on his back and a faint odor like blood but none present. Do you think I should keep him in there until he gets bigger or just until he is feeling 100% better?

I know he is on the bottom of the pecking order. His other two brothers are not quite as small as he is. He is a very sweet rooster.

No she wasn't sick or behaving any differently before the mean one attacked her. I have ran in and stood between the mean one and the frizzle and other polish, I just have the 3 in the pen. Or I did have until Bogie got injured! I have a barred rock roo and another roo in another pen, with 9 pullets and I have never seen the roos as aggressive as this one little polish pullet!! I was wondering should I give the injured polish polyvisol or not? So far she is eating and drinking, but I am afraid to think of what is going to happen! I mean if she isn't able to walk again, I have decided I am not keeping the aggressive polish, she is going to go! I am not risking her injuring any more birds! I hate to do it, they are or where my favs. I have found a good home for my frizzle too. I didn't want to put her in the pen with the older roos and pullets. And I don't want to leave her in the pen alone! She still misses Bogie a lot!

I am so sorry for your hurt polish. I've never had luck with any polish I've raised except for one blind one. I would keep her separated....did the hurt polish get along ok with the frizzle before it was injured? if so, I would plan on making them coop-mates after the injured one gets better.

I am so sorry. I hate mean birds.

I would separate the mean one, for several days. Hopefully the other two can then live together peacefully. When you re-introduce the mean one, he should be at the bottom of the pecking order, which will hopefully solve the problem.

If I had to keep the injured one seaprate til it healed, I would keep the mean one separate even longer.

If not -- no mean chickens are kept here. Up to you.

My injured polish Bogie isn't getting better! He still can't walk! Please can someone tell me anything I may try to help him! I know it is hard, not knowing for sure the extent of the injury!! I can't just leave him in the box on the porch, it doesn't seem fair to him! But since he is still eating and drinking fine, I hate to have to I don't even want to say it!! What kind of a time limit would you give on this,? and if he still doesn't show improvement then I will have to do it!
