I gathered eggs today. Just like every other day since my 13 hens started laying last summer. But today there were tiny little bugs on one of the eggs. Some gray. Some reddish. I'm thinking mites. I look at the eggs CLOSELY EVERY day. So this is brand new. Further inspection found a few more bugs in a few of the nesting boxes. Mainly could see them on the golf balls. I went out with a flash light this evening and inspected maybe half the hens and couldn't see any mites on them. I looked at the skin. I know that his just may mean that they all don't have them yet, or I wasn't looking in the right areas. I did find one on their perch.
Anyway. I need to know what kind of mites. Chicken mites? Or the northern fowl mites?
And I swear I searched this subject and read about mites in the learning center. But I still don't know exactly what I have here and exactly how to treat.
I want to get this treated NOW before it gets out of hand.
Okay...now I need to go take a shower. Thinking about these creepy crawlies has me itchy all over.

Here's some info. Hope this helps

I think the most recommended treatment is either poultry dust or sevin. You will also need to treat the coop as they can hide. I've read that some people "paint" their wooden parts of the coop with kerosene. I'm not sure I'd go that far unless I was desperate. Also as a preventive people use Diatomaceous Earth in the coop and where they dustbathe. I sprinkle a little poultry dust under the bedding in the coop when I clean.
